Volunteers Needed at Family Assistance Center:
A BIG THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who have helped or offered to help at the Family Assistance Center. Your time and flexibility have been greatly appreciated. A decision has been made to extend the length of time that the Family Assistance Center will remain open. New shifts have become available at the Family Assistance Center that has been set up to serve Hurricane Katrina evacuees. At the center, evacuees will be able to register with FEMA, be assigned a case worker, and get connected to any other services they may need.
Volunteers will help direct people around the center and generally help out as needed. Please be prepared to be flexible and patient.
Volunteer shifts are available, Monday through Saturday through October 8th, for the following times: 9:00 am-1:00 pm and 1:00 pm -5:00pm. You must sign up for a shift in order to volunteer. Please sign up for a shift(s) through our web site www.volunteersandiego.org.
Specialized volunteers needed: Do you have an accounting or financial background? 2 volunteers are needed each day, M - Saturday from 9:00AM-5:00PM at the Family Assistance Center. Do you have a strong data entry background? 5 people are needed per shift (8:00AM - 1:00PM and 12:00 - 5:00PM at the Red Cross Kearny Mesa Headquarters. Data entry help needed beginning this weekend. Sign up information will be on our website Friday . YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND.

With all that has been happening on the Gulf Coast, the importance and power of community service are recognized now more than ever. While not everyone is able to go out to the disaster areas to lend a hand, there are many needs right here in San Diego County that could use your help. Our 15th annual Hands On San Diego is scheduled for Sept. 17-25 and will address the diverse needs of our community. Visit our web site to find a project near you or join us for the Kick-off Event on Sept. 17th, from 8:30-noon. We will be cleaning two canyons around Balboa Park as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and can make a difference.
